In what will remain in the memory of all Irish dog show people as one of the most exciting events to be witness to in the world of show dogs, the FCI European Section Winners show for 2009 came to an end at the Royal Dublin Society showgrounds in Dublin’s Ballsbridge on Monday. Rarely, if ever again, will the Irish dog show exhibitor or fancier get the opportunity to experience this kind of event at their doorstep and to be part of the excitement that these shows bring. Let there be no mistake ! The Irish Kennel Club did what they had set out to do. They hosted the European Winners Show in Dublin and this show really was a European Winners Show. It wasn’t solely an Irish Kennel Club show and that must be the biggest compliment that we can give the organising team. Those exhibitors who had traveled such long distances to get to Dublin for the show are to be congratulated by us all because it was their arrival which really made the event an eye opener for the Irish exhibitors who may not normally get to view the foreign exhibits close up except on the usual Crufts trips. It may not have been the largest European Winners show entries wise, as in the end a various number of reasons combined to cause difficulties in getting exhibitors and dogs to Dublin, but it certainly did have quality and excitement on each day. The whole show came about by thinking ‘outside the box’ over three years ago and bringing a bid to the FCI delegates meeting in June of 2006 in Helsinki. Along the way there were worries and concerns about the road ahead but the general view after the event is one of great delight that the show was so successful as an event for the exhibitor and it has opened up a new view of the show world and the hobby for those in the sport in Ireland who had not experienced a European styled event on this scale. It was a real eye opener for many of our own exhibitors as they challenged for honours throughout the halls and marquees around the venue where they were pitched against some of the top winners from around Europe and indeed the world. There were some outstanding dogs present at the RDS over the three days and some did not even make the major podium awards but that’s the nature of dog showing. For Irish exhibitors there were mixed results throughout the rings and it took some by surprise to see how vocal and excitable some of the overseas exhibitors were during the three days of the show. I have to say that I thought part of the whole enjoyment of the experience was seeing how passionate the overseas visitors and exhibitors embrace the sport and really enjoy their wins although their disappointment in defeat was also evident. Without doubt there was a European feel to the final judging of the three days and the faces in the tiered seating in the Best in Show hall showed us just how international it all was. Rarely do we hear such loud and dedicated appreciation of exhibits in Ireland as we heard last Monday evening as the curtain began to come down on this great spectacle. While there was fantastic support and appreciation of all the final ten in the line up it was as if the bulk of the spectators were willing that big Irish Kennel Club coloured rosette in to the hand of Andrew Goodsell and to the sight of the great Wire Fox Terrier ‘Ruby’. As a breed Specialist and through and through Terrier man Sean Delmar, the Irish Kennel Club President and European Winners Show 2009 Best in Show judge just knew that nothing could deny GB CH Blackdale Carousel her day of immense glory at the Royal Dublin Society Showgrounds. The roof almost lifted on the BIS hall when Sean raised the rosette and pointed to the immaculate ‘Ruby’ for the top spot having taken one final circuit of the ring of honour to huge applause and anticipation from the large ringside audience. Her young owner handler Andrew Goodsell took all in his stride as he remained calm and cool after the award was made. The team were fresh from their success at Bath Championship Show in the UK where they had been Best in Show. It was also a great day for Harry O’Donoghue of the famous Blackdale Kennels in Dundalk who fittingly saw one of his Irish bred Wire’s take the top spot.

The ever popular Fabrizzio Manni from Italy, he of the green Kermit shoes, handled the American Akita INT CH Melodor Burn The Witch to take Group 5 and the Reserve Best in Show award.

All in all it was a great show which can make us very proud to be Irish. Well done Irish Kennel Club and well done Irish Exhibitors and helpers on a marvellous achievement for our small country.
